Permit to campaign fee

Mrs. Bene Loyao, Pangasinan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - My cousin was to run for Councilor in Barlo, Mabini, Pangasinan but he already encountered problems. Being a newcomer in politics, he did not know that some of the men he had a meeting with, were on the other side of the government. The men also asked a certain fee from him so that he could freely move about and campaign in other areas. These amounts, which are quite high, could not be afforded by my cousin but he is forced to give the amount.

Our family decided to stop him from running as his immediate family might be in danger for he could not pay. We, his relatives, fear for our safety too. It is just too bad that he could no longer run for a post. He has been a good, honest community leader in Mabini and the opportunity to serve the people is lost. He would have wanted to serve but in doing so, would threaten his life and those of others.
