Gov't Watch alarmed by power outages in VisMin
Raul T. Concepcion, chairman of Gov’t Watch has expressed alarm over the daily 2 to 4 hour power blackouts in parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
Mr. Concepcion received reports from their provincial offices in typhoon and earthquake ravaged Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao that these areas have been suffering daily blackouts.
“I realize that the local government units and other government agencies are still conducting relief and search operations in these areas. However, summer is fast approaching and the blackout situation might worsen if government does not move fast in this regard,” Concepcion said.
Business establishments and residents have also expressed concern that the blackouts might extend to 8 hours daily especially because they experience drought during the summer months.
Mr. Concepcion is strongly suggesting that dams in the area be opened so that water can be utilized to generate power. During the rainy season, the water in the dams will be replaced and can build up reserves.
“I am optimistic that if we work together, we can find a quick solution to the situation and help our countrymen in these areas to cushion the impact of these blackouts and also the ever increasing cost of oil,” Concepcion added. — Gov’t Watch
