Lower increase

-

This refers to the article that appeared on page 1 of The Philippine STAR last June 1, 2011 entitled, “More colleges, universities raise tuition.”

We would like to call your attention to data which purportedly came from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) which showed that the average tuition fee hike was 14.37 percent up from 10 percent from last April 2011.

We would like to clarify that based on the data at CHED for school year 2011 to 2012, the average tuition fee increase is 10.41 percent. There are 324 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) or 14.37 percent out of a total 2,254 HEIs that have increased their tuition fees this school year.

We attach herewith the position paper of CHED entitled, “Regulating Tuition Fees: Continuing Quest for Equity and Justice” which contains pertinent data on tuition fee increase.

We hope we have clarified the relevant figures and look forward to your correction of the information originally published by your paper.

Should there be any questions regarding this matter, your office may coordinate with Kathy Moran, media relations officer, Office of the Chairman, CHED through email address [email protected]. ph and tel. no. 4411256. — PATRICIA B. LICUANAN, PhD, Chairperson, Commission on Higher Education
