WorldRemit champions education, celebrates Christmas with students
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Recognizing the importance of education in Filipino families, leading online money transfer service WorldRemit marked its one-year anniversary in the Philippines with an early Christmas celebration with the students of Cabadiangan Integrated School in Cebu Province.
According to WorldRemit, education is one of the key drivers of increased digital remittances across the globe.
In fact, new research from the money transfer service revealed that the $689 billion in remittances that migrants send back home every year helps more than 3.5 million children around the world to go to school.
In the Philippines, WorldRemit data show spikes in digital remittances during back-to-school and graduation seasons, reflecting how the education of family is also a top priority among overseas Filipino workers.
Over 560 students and 25 educators gathered to welcome WorldRemit in Compostela, Cebu as the company brought Christmas cheers and treats to the institution for the holiday season. WorldRemit employees, along with team members from the London headquarters, helped distribute school supplies and food to the students of Cabadiangan. As a way to show their gratitude, the school prepared a short program to entertain their guests and expressed their appreciation through heartfelt messages to the company.
In partnership with World Vision, WorldRemit saw the need of the school for additional educational resources, prompting them to bring in photocopying machines and paper supplies to Cabadiangan in order to reproduce learning materials to all students. According to the principal, they were only able to provide one textbook per year level, making it a challenge for educators to provide extensive class discussion and reference materials for all students.
