DepEd updates K to 12 learning materials

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) will produce updated learning materials before the school opening in June as part of the continuing development of the modules used in the K to 12 program.

“DepEd has a well-mapped process in updating or correcting its learning materials,” Education Secretary Armin Luistro told The STAR. “DepEd will be updating its learning materials in time for the school opening in June 2016.”

Luistro was responding to inquiries on whether new information – such as the updated periodic table of elements and the creation of the Negros Island Region – are reflected in the modules.

“Before changes are made in our learning materials, DepEd gathers and collects feedback and relevant information from its end-users, education partners, and other stakeholders,” Luistro said.

“We vet the additional information to experts and learning institutions with authority in the field. Once the information has been vetted, DepEd will make the appropriate modification in our learning materials,” he added.

Last week, scientists announced the discovery of four new elements, rendering obsolete the current periodic table printed in chemistry books and modules.

President Aquino also approved the creation of the Negros Island Region last year, requiring an update of the Araling Panlipunan and Philippine geography learning materials.

In an earlier interview, Luistro said DepEd’s use of modules, instead of books, will make it easier for the agency to update existing learning materials as they can reprint in parts.

DepEd has a P502-million budget for printing and publication expenses this year under the General Appropriations Act.
