Phl math wizards win anew in Korea

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ young math wizards again held their own in the recently-concluded 2014 Korea International Mathematics Competitions, winning a decent share of gold, silver and medals in the individual contests, and championship trophies in the team and group categories.

The KIMC, which had the Elementary Mathematics International Contest for elementary school level, and the Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-cities Competition (IWYMIC) for high school level, drew almost 600 contestants from 30 countries.

In the Korea IWYMIC or High School contest, the Philippines harvested gold medals aside from silver, bronze and merit awards.

Winning the Philippines’ 2 gold medals were Albert John Patupat of Holy Rosary College and Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College, both of Team B.

Their teammates, Andrea Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School and Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College won bronze medals each. 

The four members of Team B: Patupat, Ang, Jaba, and Soon also won a second runner up trophy in the Team Contests and a championship trophy in the Group contests.

Team A’s Miko Johnson Co of St. Stephen’s High School won a bronze medal in the Individual contests while Alyssa Guevara of Philippine Science High School Main won a merit award.

Team C’s Vince Jan Torres of Sta. Rosa Science & Technology High School won a bronze medal in the individual contests, while Isabel Jocyn Villanueva won a merit award. Torrez and Villanueva, and their teammates Gene Go Jr., of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Janine Michelle Yu of Philippine Institute of Quezon City also won a second runner-up trophy in the team contests.

Team D’s Shaquille Wyan Que of Grace Christian College won a silver medal in the individual contests, and Jinger Sia Chong and Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude Catholic School won merit awards each. Chong, Que and Tan, along with teammate Steven John Wang of UNO High School won second runner up trophies in the team contests as well as in the Group Contests.

At the EMIC, Philippines’ Team B’s Fedrick Lance Lim of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Jonathan Conrad Yu of Philippine Christian Gospel School both won a silver medal in the individuals category.

Juan Pablo Abola of PAREF Southridge School won a bronze while Robert Gerard Diaz Uy of St. John Institute won a merit award.

Philippines’ Team A’s David Alexander Amante of Canossa Academy-Lipa City won a bronze medal in the individual contest.

Team A’s Albriz Moore Bagsic of Lilyrose School; Hans Benedict Te of Bacolod Tay Tung High School; and Gregory Charles Tiong of St. Jude Catholic School also won merit awards each.

Team A also won a first runner-up trophy in the team contests.

Team B won a championship in the team contests and second runner-up winners in the group contests.
