Pinoy students continue winning streak in HK math contest
MANILA, Philippines - The country’s young math wizards continue their winning streak this year, winning a good share of medals at the 17th Po Leung Kuk Primary Math World Contest in Hong Kong last week.
Team Philippines won three gold, four silver, and 5 bronze medals, a first runner-up trophy in the group contests, and eight Merit Awards in the team contests.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines, said that the splendid performance of the MTG-Philippines team in the 17th Po Leung Kuk PMWC was a good start for 2014, one of the first international math olympiads of the year.
John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School, Stefan Marcus Ong and Steven Ting Reyes of Saint Jude Catholic School brought home the three gold medals of the country they won in the individual contests.
Karl Raymond Roque of Notre Dame of Greater Manila; Immanuel Josiah Balete of St. Stephen’s High School; William Joshua King of Bethany Christian School; and Andrhea San Gabriel of Small World Christian School Foundation won the Philippines’ four silver medals.
Bert Joseph Tropicales of Southernside Montesori School; Patrick Nino Policarpio of Greenpark Montessori Learning Center; Bryce Ainsley Sanchez of Grace Christian College; Maxinne Louise Dominique Co of Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS; and Ryan Jericho Sy of Chiang Kai Shek College bagged the 5 bronzes for the country.
Stefan Marcus Ong and Steven Ting Reyes of Saint Jude Catholic School; William Joshua King of Bethany Christian School; and John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School who made up Philippines’ Team C won first runner-up in the Group Contests.
The four also won a Merit Award each in the team contests.
Mickel Lyle Angelo Pe of Antique SPED Center; Genrish Wendell Ng of Saint Jude Catholic School; Bert Joseph Tropicales of Southernside Montesori School; Karl Raymond Roque of Notre Dame of Greater Manila — all members of Philippine Team A, won a Merit Award each, also in the team contests.
