Makati public schools top National Achievement Test

MANILA, Philippines - Makati City public schools have scored better than private schools in this year’s National Achievement Test (NAT) taken by Grade Six and Fourth Year high school students.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay said he was pleased with the results recently released by the Department of Education National Education Testing and Research Center (DepEd-NTERC).

“Such achievements serve to validate and reward the continuing commitment of the city government to providing the youth of Makati with quality education,” he said.

In his report to the mayor, DepEd-Makati officer-in-charge Dr. Dominico Idanan said Makati public schools got a higher mean percentage score (MPS) average in the elementary level, 64.30 percent compared to 55.35 percent for private schools. In the high school level, the city’s public schools got 63.06 percent while private schools posted 54.87 percent.

Idanan said Makati Science High School (MSHS) topped the high school level as it posted the highest MPS average of 82.07 percent. MSHS topped in all the NAT subject areas – Mathematics (84.47 percent), Araling Panlipunan (84.37 percent), English (84.22 percent), Filipino (78.99 percent), Science (75.22 percent), and Critical Thinking (67.84 percent).

The report also showed that six of the top 10 Makati high schools in terms of MPS average are public schools, while the remaining four are private schools. MSHS was followed by Makati Hope Christian School with 72.76 percent, Assumption College, Inc. with 65.82 percent, Pitogo High School (65.82 percent), San Isidro National High School (65.30 percent), Bethany Baptist Academy (64.68 percent), Benigno Aquino High School (64.09 percent), Tibagan High School (63.98 percent), Don Bosco Technical Institute (62.78 percent), and Bangkal High School (61.14 percent).

At the elementary level, the Makati schools that made it to the top 10 in the NAT were composed of eight public schools and two private schools. San Antonio Village Elementary School ranked first with 79.85 percent MPS average, followed by East Rembo Elementary School, 76.46 percent, Nemesio I. Yabut Elementary School, 73.96 percent, Pembo Elementary School, 72.09 percent, San Jose Elementary School, 71.96 percent, Food for Hungry Minds, 71.68 percent, Nicanor Garcia Elementary School, 70.52 percent, Colegio San Agustin, 68.93 percent, Rizal Elementary School, 68.93 percent, and Bangkal Elementary School, 67.41 percent.

Makati has been consistently topping the NAT high school level in the NCR for five straight years now, specifically SY 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and now 2012-2013. It also placed first in 2005-2006, and ranked second in 2007 and 2004. In the elementary level, Makati placed third among public and private elementary schools in the NCR, slipping from its first place ranking last year.
