World-class education, the UNSW way

Emarrah Sarreal - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In the age of hyper-connectivity, getting a true world-class education is available to those who seek it. Dennis Alonzo, a graduate of the University of Southeastern Philippines, found his match in the University of New South Wales. Known for its international focus, the research powerhouse boasts of strong international and industry links that give students a competitive edge wherever they may choose to go in the world.

Q: Why did you choose to study at UNSW?

A: UNSW has a good reputation being a research-intensive university and its high support to research students. Other factors I considered include the high profile of my ‘would then’ supervisor, the strategic location of the university and the wide range of course offerings in education.

Q: How would you describe the quality of teaching staff at UNSW?

A: The teaching staff draws most of their discussion from their experiences here and overseas. I saw the interplay of theories in their practical work and I learned a lot from their extensive experiences.

Q: Have you undertaken practical experience during your degree?

A: Part of my research is being conducted in Brunei where I was recommended by my supervisor, who is the lead consultant to the Ministry of Education of Brunei.

Q: What sets apart a UNSW education?

A: UNSW has put me in for a lot of international conferences where people from different countries hear me talking about my contribution in education. This provides me opportunities to meet people who are world leaders in education and establish linkage with them and has started collaboration for future programs and activities. Also, my program has opened opportunities for me to work in various international research projects and further enhance my research capabilities and earn extra money as well. Overall, I gained broad knowledge and very rich practical skills for a very specific task.

Q: Did you enjoy studying with a diverse and multicultural student population?

A: This is the beauty in an Australian university where I get to meet people coming from different parts of the world. Not only I learnt their culture and ways of life but during discussion on any topics related to my field I always hear a repertoire of anecdotes and experiences from different countries. It is the value-added in this very multicultural learning environment where you don’t need to go to other countries to learn how people work there but you will get a snap shot through interaction and listening to the first hand experiences of your classmates.

Q: What do you love most about Sydney and UNSW?

A: There are more things that Sydney, including UNSW, has to offer ranging from cultural, historical, social, recreational and financial. So it is easy for any international student to find activities which suit his/her interest to give him/herself a break from academic activities.
