Global IT learning in UST with Acer Academy

MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas (UST) may be the oldest in the Philippines and in Asia, but their strong spirit in giving quality education remains updated.

UST recently joined Acer in its advocacy of using modern technology in teaching by becoming one of the first schools to be part of “Acer Academy.” The program was developed by the IT leader to equip school administrators and teachers methods of lecturing and interacting with their students, brought up within a technology-rich environment.

The University felt both curious and excited when it signed up for Acer Academy last school year, after it discovered that this initiative is relevant to the institution, most especially to students. But UST was never new to what Acer and its products are all about.

For more than five years now, 75% of UST’s PCs in the campus are commercial type computers such as the Acer Veriton desktops. They also have Acer Travelmate laptops and entry-level servers. And just recently, the school acquired Acer Iconia tablets as well.

UST’s considerations for choosing the right product for the campus were not just based on the brand or its bundled value-added services. The institution follows a simple and basic guideline in choosing: must fit to the requirement, cost effective, hardware availability, and, their most important guideline, reliable technical support. All these were met by Acer.

And now that UST is an Acer Academy member, UST gets more benefits from the two-year partnership. The program offers a professional and career development plan for school administrators, principals, librarians and teachers. For the students, meanwhile, Acer Academy opens the doors for students to attend IT-enablement conferences, internship opportunities at Acer, and a chance for qualified students to receive the Acer IT excellence Award.

The partnership also grants the school P10,000 (for a Gold partner) or P30,000 (for a Platinum partner) worth of sponsorship in an official school event. The advantages to education and individual learning are long-term.

UST acknowledges other member schools participating in this program. Acer Academy hopes to help schools deliver the right response by promoting a digital classroom framework that makes use of Acer’s suite of products and services.
