DepEd offers culture-based teacher training scholarship

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The government is providing scholarship grants to over 100 teachers and school supervisors for effective culture-based teaching of the K to 12 curriculum.

The Department of Education (DepEd) said the funding for the scholarships will come from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

The scholarship will cover the tuition and workshop kits/materials for the first 80 qualified teachers nominated by their principals and first 50 school supervisors endorsed by their superintendents or regional directors.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the goal of K to 12 is to develop holistic learners who are fully aware of their cultural identity as Filipinos.

“While K to 12 is geared towards producing world-calibre graduates, all learning should be anchored on our unique experience and culture as Filipinos,” he said.

The Luzon and National Capital Region training seminar is set on May 27 to 29 at Teachers Camp in Baguio City while the supervisor’s training will be on May 15 to 17 at PETA Theatre Center in Quezon City.

The Visayas and Mindanao clusters training seminars concluded last month.

The Kaguruang Makabayan: National Training on Culture-based Teaching of the K to 12 curriculum for teachers and education supervisors is jointly implemented by the NCCA, DepEd and the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA).

K to 12 adds two years to basic education so students may be ready to join the workforce as early as after high school.

DepEd began in 2012-2013 the implementation of the K to 12 program, with Grade I entrants in 2012–2013 being the first batch to fully undergo the program.
