Globe Telecom partners with PCCED on Project Citizen National Showcase
MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom was tapped by the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy (PCCED) as program partner for Project Citizen National Showcase, a competition that challenges public high school students to find solutions that can best address issues affecting their communities such as poor sanitation, flooding, garbage segregation, among others.
Globe provided information and communications technology (ICT) tools that include an LCD projector and Tattoo broadband sticks to the winner of the Project Citizen National Showcase held on April 13 at the University of Makati.
To be used as teaching and internet connectivity tools, the LCD projector and Tattoo broadband sticks would help teachers develop in their students the necessary civic knowledge and values that would enable them to enjoy their rights and accept their responsibilities as citizens of the nation.
“Globe Telecom’s participation in the program shows its support in training the next generation of leaders and in strengthening the country’s democratic processes. We believe that our youth possess the creativity and energy to come up with solutions to practical problems that beset their schools and their communities,†said Rob Nazal, head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.
He added: “This initiative is part of the iLead pillar of Globe CSR which seeks to empower the youth to become transformational leaders and active citizens, thereby influencing positively the next generation of leaders.â€
The event will bring together the best Project Citizen Teams from all over the country. Teams competing are already winners in their respective localities, namely: Muntinlupa Science HS (NCR), Pines City National HS (Baguio), Tanauan School of Fisheries (Batangas), Tinago HS (Naga), Luisa Medel National HS (Bacolod), Tagbilaran City Science HS (Bohol), Davao city National HS (Davao), and Regional Science HS for Region IX (Zamboanga).
Each of the teams will be presenting their respective public policy proposal to a community problem which they have earlier identified within their respective communities.
By proposing solutions through the Project Citizen program, the students are molded to become active citizens eager to be part of the solution. To date, some of their proposals have even been adopted by their local barangays as resolutions and implemented accordingly.
Project Citizen is an international initiative being implemented in the Philippines by PCCED. It is an issues-centered civic education program for high school students that promotes competent and responsible participation in matters affecting local and national government. It has been cited by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as one of the best practices in enhancing youth participation in electoral cycles.
