Taiwan scholarships now open to Filipinos

The Philippine Star

Three different types of scholarships in Taiwan are now open to Filipino students through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines. In lieu of the Republic of China’s (Taiwan) mission to strengthen its educational linkages across the globe, these three scholarships are offered specifically for international students who wish to immerse in the rich Taiwanese culture while pursuing further studies.

The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) is a one-year language scholarship for students who wish to undertake Mandarin language (Huayu) courses in Taiwan. Each year, five students are chosen to receive the HES scholarship. They will each receive monthly stipend of NTD$25,000 (approximately P36,000) to cover tuition fees, local lodging, and other expenses.

For those who wish to pursue their postgraduate studies (Masters or Doctorate degree) in the Taiwan university of their choice, 10 slots for the Taiwan Scholarship are available. The program duration is two years for students in the Masters program and three years for those in the Doctorate program. Each Taiwan Scholarship recipient will receive a monthly stipend of NTD$30,000 (approximately P44,000) to cover tuition fees, local lodging, and other expenses.

The 2013 International Higher Education Scholarship Program (IHESP), provided by the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has also started to accept applications for the 2013 grants. The TaiwanICDF will provide each prospective recipient with an economy class roundtrip air ticket and a monthly stipend during the duration of the program in Taiwan. Further questions about the IHESP may be directed to TECO Political Division at 8876688 ext 105.

Application period is from Feb. 10 to April 15, 2013. For more information, applicants may contact the TECO Press Division at 8876688 ext 141 or visit the TECO website at http://www.roc-taiwan.org/ph where the downloadable forms are available.
