MANILA, Philippines - More than half a million elementary and high school students from different public and private schools nationwide participated in this year’s elimination rounds of the 2013 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) held during the third week of January. Elimination rounds were held in all the 17 regions of the country and for the first time, all the 10 DepEd Divisions in ARMM have participated. Those who qualified in the eliminations will proceed to the Division Finals on Feb. 7 and 8. “It was a great experience for the students especially for the first-timers to compete in the Math Challenge. My students were really challenged with the questions on this year’s elimination rounds. It provided them an advanced learning avenue,†said Coach Alalaine Lubiano Basco in a post via the MMC Facebook Fanpage.
Now on its 12th year, MMC is the most widely participated math competitions in the country among elementary and highschool students. It is being organized by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and the Department of Education (DepEd). The annual Math Challenge produces national winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions. Among them is Farrell Eldrian Wu, first place in the Individual Category for Grade 6 of the 2012 Metrobank Math Challenge, who got a perfect score in the 2012 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) participated by around 500,000 contestants from over 30 countries worldwide.
