Phl math team wins big in India int’l math tourney

LUCKNOW, India — A 15-man team of young Filipino math wizards dominated the 5th International Young Mathematician’s Convention (IYMC) math tournament in Lucknow, India, harvesting a bumper crop of two team championship trophies; and 30 (18 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze) medals.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG)- Philippines, expressed pride over the “impressive” performance of the 15 members of Team Philippines, congratulating them for the fruit of the hard work they put in to prepare for the tournament.

“I’m very proud of their impressive performance and I’m happy that all their hard work to prepare for this tournament paid off such handsomely,” Chua told STAR.

Gen Mark Veloso Tanno of Southville International School, John Aries Ceazar Hingan of San Beda College-Alabang, and Shawn Gabriele Cabanes of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, won nine of the country’s 18 gold medal haul, winning a gold medal in the individual contest, as well as two golds each in the Math Relay and Over-All Performance in the team contests as members of Philippine Team E.

Tanno, Hingan and Cabanes of Philippine Team E also won a team championship trophy.

Andrea Jessica Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School, Dielle Tan Tio of St. Stephen’s High School, and Raenelle Ean Ngo of Chiang Kai Shek College, won a gold medal each in the individual contest, as well as a silver medal each in the math relay team contest, and a bronze in the team over-all performance category.

Jaba, Tio and Ngo of Philippine Team B also got a team championship trophy.

Also winning a gold medal in the individual contests were Jose Alfonso Ignacio Mirabueno of Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao (Davao) campus, Ethan Riley Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Himig Sy Marcos of Philippine Cultural College-Main, Jason Carlo Ong Carranceja of Grace Christian College, Jervis Ong Chua of Phil. Cultural College-Main, and Lorenzo Tangente Magnaye of Philippine Science High School-Main.

Winning a silver medal in the individual contest was Jezariah Chacon Garcia of Valenzuela City Science High School.

Claire Klemaine Frago Dela Cruz of Integrated Montessori Center-Taguig; and John Gedric Villarosa Tudio of Marist School-Marikina City bagged a bronze medal in the individual contest.

Mirabueno, Chan and Garcia, grouped under Philippine Team A, also bagged a bronze medal in the team Math Quiz team contest.

The triumphant Team Philippines is arriving from India today, Dec. 6, via Philippine Airlines flight PR 753 with an expected arrival time of 1:25 p.m.

The Philippines topped the list of gold medal winners in the Junior Level covering Grades 9 and 10 or 3rd year and 4th year high school, of the 5th IYMC with the 18 gold medal haul, followed by host country India which bagged 10, and then Thailand which had 4, Taiwan 3, and Indonesia 2.
