100 students granted ‘Asenso’ scholarships

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines  — At least 100 students in the capital town of Mati City, Davao Oriental, were granted scholarships at the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST).

The scholarships were granted by the Mati City Scholarship Board following the completion of the evaluation of the application for renewal of the said 100 students in the DOSCST.

“We follow strictly the grant requirements especially in the aspect of grades,” Oliveros explained. “The scholarship guidelines are strict when it comes to the weighted average that each grantee maintains during the semester. Thus, there is a need for renewal of the grant every after semester.”

The grant package is equivalent to P15,000 per grantee for every semester. It is inclusive of tuition, monthly stipend, and uniform/book allowance. This year, the city government will spend P3 million to sustain the program.

Known as the Asenso Sa Edukasyon program, it is targeted to produce 500 college graduates from low-income families. On the other hand, it maintains a high standard for entry as well as for renewal.

“We wanted to empower poor families by allowing them to have someone finish college and eventually find a good-paying job. This is a social program aimed at helping reduce poverty,” Mayor Michelle Rabat said.
