Mangyan project tops DepEd literacy program search
MANILA, Philippines - A literacy project initiated by a religious sister for Mangyans in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro topped the 2012 national search for Most Outstanding Literacy Program undertaken recently by the Department of Education (DepEd) in Baguio City.
Davao City, headed by Mayor Sarah Duterte , placed first in the highly urbanized city category in the literacy search for Outstanding Local Government Unit (OLGU) .
The results of the search culminated the recent four-day National Literacy Conference and Awards conducted by DepEd at the Teachers Camp in the City of Pines.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro identified the winning literacy program as “Pamana Ka: Paaralang Mangyan na Angkop sa Kulturang Aalalagaan” submitted by Sister Aristes Bautista of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Salcedo explained that Sis. Bautista’s program reached out to the marginalized members of Occidental Mindoro’s Indigenous Peoples (IPs)to help “alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promise freedom and make education facilities accessible.”
