DepEd workshops to boost science teachers' teaching skills

- Rainier Allan Ronda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) has readied a series of seminar-workshops for science mentors in public and private elementary and secondary schools this September to boost their teaching skills especially under the enhanced curriculum of the DepEd’s K (Kindergarten) to 12 basic education curriculum (BEC) reform program.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the DepEd will make the most of the 2012 National Science Club Month (NSCM) celebration this September to strengthen science education in public schools under the K to 12 program.

Luistro said a strong foundation in the sciences in basic education can be a building block to a sound economy in the future.

“If we can create an environment that nurtures young scientists, we can expect to develop generations of Filipino scientists who will draw the blueprint for a prosperous future,” he said.

Luistro has issued DepEd Memorandum No. 138 slating a seminar workshop that will focus on enhancing the knowledge and strategies of science mentors in the teaching of the sciences and technology using the Spiral Progression Scheme.

A stronger focus in science education is one of the goals of K to 12 which is being rolled out in phases in the public school system.

“Through the workshop, we want to introduce new trends in science and technology teaching, and on how they can find application in real life situations,” Luistro explained.

The NSCM celebration and seminar workshop for science club leaders has been set at the Ecotech Center, Lahug, Cebu City from Sept. 26 to 30, 2012.

Science club advisers, science teachers, school principals and administrators as well as science enthusiasts nationwide are invited by DepEd to the workshop.

The foregoing activities are in line with Presidential Proclamation 264 issued Sept. 23, 2002 which declared September as the NSCM month.
