Globe connects 2,017th public school to the internet

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For more than a decade now, Globe Telecom has been connecting public elementary and high schools to the internet to expose students to a wealth of information and multimedia learning tools that allow them to foster superior math, science and language skills.

Through the Internet-in-School Program (ISP) of its Corporate Social Responsibility arm Bridging Communities, Globe is able to bring the latest e-learning tools to Sto. Nino Elementary School in Barangay San Antonio, Marikina City, representing the 2,017th public school to be connected by Globe to the internet.

“Globe ISP is part of the CSR efforts of Globe geared towards putting up sustainable development projects in the various communities that it serves. This time, we want to address the social and intellectual disparities among schools and their respective graduates caused by lack of ICT facilities. Thus, through Globe ISP, we hope to give public schools a chance to be competitive,” said Rob Nazal, head of Globe CSR.

Aside from one year free DSL internet connection of 3Mbps, Globe also donated six units of brand new desktop PCs and six sets of computer tables and chairs to the school.

“Marikina is always close to our hearts since it is one of the first service areas for the landline business of Globe. That is why we are glad to be of service to the community by promoting the use of ICT in education,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, head of Globe corporate and legal services group who was present during the PC turnover activity.

Globe ISP is the company’s continuing contribution to the Department of Education Internet Connectivity Program and Computerization Program.

Internet connectivity in schools is primarily used for research by the students and for other classroom-related activities. On the other hand, teachers also use the Internet to collaborate with their colleagues on inter-school projects as well as to touch base with former students.
