K to 12 curriculum seminar at Academic Book Fair

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - With DepEd’s recent launch of the K to 12 basic education reform program, private schools are equally supportive of this move.

Responding to the challenges met in the implementation of the educational reform, IBC Book Consolidators, Inc., in partnership with international publishers Glencoe / McGraw-Hill Education, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt School Publishers and National Geographic Learning will hold a seminar on “Providing Solutions for the Effective Implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum“ on July 10, 1:30 – 7 p.m., at the Megatrade Hall 1, 5th Level Mega B, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City The seminar is part of the program for the 16th Philippine Academic Book Fair slated from July 10 tol 14.

“This seminar aims to help school administrators, subject area coordinators and teachers to understand the rational for the K to 12 curriculum and help them implement the changes in the curriculum effectively” states Dina Berioso, managing director of IBC Book Consolidators, Inc.

Atty. M.C. Tonisito Umali, DepEd assistant secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs will talk on “The rational for the K to 12 curriculum and DepEd’s implementation program.”

Luis Prudencio Salamat, grade school principal of PAREF Southridge School, and Rev. Fr. Gerardo de Villa, OSB, principal of Basic Education Department of San Beda College Alabang, will share how their schools have been successfully implementing Grade K-7 curriculum using the Understanding by Design (UbD) curriculum framework and the spiral progression approach.

Myla Katzav, general manager of Ideacademy and representative of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Education will showcase McGraw-Hill’s curriculum for Math and Science. These curricula were developed using the “spiral progression approach” of the UbD curriculum framework.

Paul Grainger, product manager of ELT/School of National Geographic Learning, will present research on how today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from previous generations. This data has serious implications on the competencies required by today’s K-12 students, as well as the methods used to motivate learners and facilitate learning.

Advocating “Every Child a Reader,” Estela Suyat, Philippine representative of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt School Publishers, will also share reading strategies and resources using differentiated instruction to meet all student needs.

School administrators, principals, subject area coordinators, and educators interested to attend the seminar may contact Dina Berioso or Bernadette Berioso of IBC Book Consolidators, Inc. at 8940627, 0917-8240627 or email [email protected].
