DepEd reminds schools to hold make-up classes

Rainier Allan Ronda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) said that schools are expected to hold make-up classes for the “teaching-learning” days lost as a result of the suspension on classes in most regions of Luzon when typhoon “Pedring” ravaged the country.

Cristina Ganzon, DepEd Communications Unit director, said that while the department stresses the importance of the holding of make-up classes, there was no need to rush these and school heads are given the decision when to hold them.

“There is no need to hurry and hold the make-up classes immediately like this coming Saturday,” Ganzon told the STAR.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro had earlier stressed his position that all public and private elementary and high schools throughout the country should make sure that there are 180 school days of “actual teaching and learning” for students that will cover all the proficiencies they are expected to learn in the school year.

It will be recalled that classes were suspended last Monday afternoon, and the whole day of Tuesday in Metro Manila and in different regions of Luzon as a result of the heavy rains brought by “Pedring”.

Yesterday, most of Metro Manila had resumed classes except for the cities of Malabon, Marikina, and Navotas and some schools in Valenzuela, Quezon City, Muntinlupa and Manila.

Classes remained suspended yesterday in Bulacan; and Nueva Vizcaya; San Mateo, Antipolo, Rodriguez, and Cainta in Rizal due to storm signal No. 3 raised over these provinces.
