Schools in SE Asia and the Pacific look up to ABET-accredited Mapúa
MANILA, Philippines - As the only school in East Asia with engineering courses that have international ABET accreditation, Mapúa Institute of Technology has been placed in the global map of higher education excellence as other institutions in Southeast Asia and the Pacific begin to turn to it to enhance their own engineering programs.
Officials of FPT University of Vietnam recently visited Mapúa to learn more about the school and the ABET accreditation process. The group was welcomed by the Institute’s officers and department heads led by president and CEO Dr. Reynaldo Vea, who also led the presentation of Mapúa’s history, its quality monitoring systems, and accreditation requirements. The visiting officials also made a brief tour of Mapúa’s laboratories.
“The purpose of our visit is to have an exchange of ideas with Mapúa regarding ways for continued improvement of the quality of our education, considering that it is the first school in East Asia that has ABET-accredited engineering programs,” said Nguyen Hong Phuong, FPT University’s Academics director. “The facilities here are very impressive.”
ABET is the leading international accrediting organization for the fields of engineering, computing, applied science, and technology based in the US. Mapúa has three programs that are stamped with the ABET seal, namely, Electrical (BS-EE), Electronics (BS-ECE), and Computer Engineering (BS-CpE), indicating that their educational standards are world class.
Another educational institution, the University of Guam (UOG), also recently signed a memorandum of agreement to develop academic relations with Mapúa to support the former’s efforts to launch its own engineering school.
The agreement will enhance relations between the two institutions to promote cooperation in such areas as faculty and student exchanges, training and study programs, and other mutually beneficial endeavors.
