Dengue detecting device inventors' team leader most outstanding eng'g graduate

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines —Team leader of students who invented the Dengue Detecting Device (3D) is the most outstanding engineering graduate of the Bulacan State University (BulSU) this year.

Donn Angelo Teodoro, 21, an Electronic Communication Engineering (ECE) student is set to receive magna cum laude honors on Monday. The youngest son of a publisher of a local newspaper, and a village treasurer, Teodoro is a consistent dean’s lister.

Nicanor Dela Rama, dean of BulSU College of Engineering said that aside from the magna cum laude honors, Teodoro and his teammates who invented the Dengue Detecting Device (3-D) will also receive a special award. Dela Rama said that special award is a way of recognizing the students’ efforts and contribution to BulSU.

Aside from Teodoro, other members of the team that invented the 3-D are Ronald Capule, 21 of Matimbo, Malolos City; Reymond Gabayoyo, 20, and Fatima Suerte Felipe, 20 both of Sto. Rosario, Paombong town; Melody Ann Leonardo, 21, Biniang 1st, Bocaue; and Laurence Louie Lugue, San Vicente, Apalit, Pampanga.

The team invented the 3-D which is designed to fast track detection of dengue disease that will lead to treatment and possible saving of lives.

Teodoro told the STAR in an exclusive interview that they came up with the idea of developing a 3-D when dengue incidence in Bulacan hit the headlines last year as it reached epidemic levels.

He also admitted that they first designed the 3-D as their group thesis and later submitted it to the 7th Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP).

The group’s 3-D thesis was eventually awarded the grand prize in the 7th annual SWEEP awards earning them P500,000 in cash and another P500,000 in equipment for BulSU.

Teodoro said that the 3-D will indirectly save lives as it will allow early detection of dengue fever.
