Mapua to hold talks on Probability Concepts in civil engineering

-

MANILA, Philippines - New and advanced knowledge in civil engineering will be presented by Dr. Alfredo H-S Ang, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine, in a lecture entitled “Technology for 21st Century Engineers - on Risk and Uncertainty.” To be held tomorrow, March 25, 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the AVR1 of Mapua IT Center in Makati City, the lecture will stress the importance of considering risks and uncertainties when designing and building structures. Employing probabilistic methods in engineering will help mitigate loss of lives and property, human suffering, and economic losses in case of events like severe typhoons and strong earthquakes. Dr. Ang is a 1954 graduate in Civil Engineering of the Mapua Institute of Technology. He obtained his M.S. in Structural Engineering and Ph.D in Structural Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He co-authored the best-selling textbook Probability Concepts in Engineering, which has sold millions of copies worldwide. Joining him is UP Professor of Civil Engineering and former Director of the National Hydraulic Research Center at UP Diliman, Dr. Leonardo Liongson, who will deliver a lecture on “Planning and Operations with Uncertainties in Flood Management”. Organized by the Mapua Institute of Technology, the one-day lecture is open to Mapua Civil Engineering students and faculty members as well as practicing civil engineers.
