National robotics exhibition, competition set Jan 22

MANILA, Philippines - The 2011 National Robotics Competition will be held on Jan. 22, 2011 at the Activity Center of the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City. The event is being organized by Genetic Computer Institute and Data Science & Technology Corp. In keeping with the noble objectives of robotics in fostering educational aims and teaching life skills, the event opens up three major game categories where student delegates can engage in a friendly match highlighting their cunning ability in programming, creativity and cleverness in design and assembly, and keen foresight for possible match turnouts. Last year, over a hundred teams competed in different game events and the winning team represented the Philippines in the International Robotics Olympiad held in Busan, South Korea.

Two of the regular games are retained for this year, the Sumobot and Agribot, and a third and new one is added called the Robotech Challenge, an exhibition of different robot projects that are designed to help solve problems of global scope.

Sumobot is a game of autonomous sumo robots where each robot will attempt to push the opponent out of the ring. These robots are capable of seeking out their opponent and staying within the ring.

The Agribot is a game that simulates the cycle of agriculture which starts with the planting, followed by watering, harvesting, and finally transporting and selling the crops in the market and going back to the field to start anew.

The Robotech Challenge is an exhibition of Robotics Projects that are designed to help the world in solving the problem of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a floating pile of garbage approximately the size of Texas. The task of the student participants is to show by way of a Robotics Project using various media a probable solution in helping the world leaders deal with the problem.

There will also be free robotics workshops for high school students and exhibitions of modern educational and technologies from different industry players.
