DepEd, UNICEF open makeshift classrooms in Leyte

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education and the United Nations Children's Fund opened five temporary learning spaces in Leyte as classes resumed on Monday in areas hit by typhoon Yolanda.

The classrooms are located in the worst hit areas of the super typhoon: Palo 1 Central School and San Joaquin Central School both in Palo towns; San Roque Elementary School in Tanauan; and Daniel Z. Romualdez Memorial Elementary School and Tolosa National High School, both in Tolosa, Leyte schools division superintendent Ronelo Al Firmo said.

Subsidies for the establishment of makeshift classrooms will also be extended as schools have already resumed operations.

The government said more learning spaces will be built in Eastern Samar, Tacloban and Ormoc as the government gathers data on the damage Yolanda wrought upon schools in the region.

Next year's budget includes funds for the construction of completely damaged classrooms.
