As the famed icon of the Western canon, Shakespeare has been interpreted across Asian cultures and traditions in remarkable ways, his work appearing not only in theater and film but also in pop cultural artifacts like manga and animé. Lending their expertise to the conference program are leading Shakespearean scholars from Taiwan, Japan, India, Korea, the United States, and the Philippines, as well as Filipino directors and playwrights who have produced and written adaptations of Shakespearean texts.

Open to teachers, students, academics, researchers, theater practitioners and anyone with a curiosity for Asian Shakespeare, the conference will be held on Dec. 5 and 6 at the Pulungang Claro M. Recto of Bulwagang Rizal in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The registration fee for the two-day conference is PHP3000.00, which covers morning snacks, lunch, afternoon snacks, conference materials, and a ticket to the Conference Performance. An early bird rate of Php2,700 applies to participants registering on or before Nov. 22.

The convenors are Professors Lily Rose Tope and Judy Ick of the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Details about the conference program, speakers and registration process are available at the official website http://conference.up.edu.ph/shakespeareinasia2013/.

The regular online registration for the first University of the Philippines International Shakespeare Conference is extended until Nov. 30. The slots are now very limited, so register now by confirming your attendance and sending your registration form to [email protected].
