MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University (FEU), through its Central Student Organization (FEUCSO) and Tanggapan ng Larangan ng Filipino, celebrates Buwan ng Wika this August with an exciting line-up of activities.
With the theme "Wikang Filipino sa Daang Matuwid,†the university will feature activities like dancing, singing, and choral recitation. There will also be an essay writing competition, a quiz bee and a professorial lecture.
Serving as the month-long festivities’ finale is a choral recitation (sabayang pagbigkas) contest that will feature the novel “Urbana and Feliza,†written by Modesto de Castro now celebrating its 150th anniversary. The competition will include participants from several Manila public and private schools who will be competing for a grand prize worth P12,000 and a detailed tour of FEU’s United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) award-winning Art Deco campus.
A lecture, “Seminar ng Wika,†was also held last August 7. Dr. Corazon Lalu-Santos of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) delivered a talk on "Ang Kapangyarihan ng Wikang Filipino sa Loob at Labas ng Akademya."
Lalu-Santos was the former chair of the ADMU Filipino Department, and is currently the president of Sanggunian sa Filipino (Sangfil), an organization that advocates the Filipino language.
According to Dr. Emmanuel Gonzales, FEU's Filipino Department Coordinator: “Makapangyarihan ang wika sapagkat maari itong gamitin sa maling pamamaraan. Ang layunin ay maipalaganap ang wikang Filipino upang magkaintindihan patungo sa matuwid na landas. (Language is powerful because it can also be used for the wrong means. The aim is to propagate the Filipino language to ensure communication toward the right path),†Gonzales said.
