MANILA, Philippines - A computer science student from the University of the Philippines Diliman impressed a panel of cyber security experts in the recently concluded Kaspersky Academy London Finals held last month at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Although he was not able to secure a spot in the top three, ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2013’ finalist Ivan Dominic Baguio still managed to win over the judging panel in one of the tasks in the competition, where contestants were asked to give a two-minute pitch persuading the panel to invest in their proposals.

"Ivan Dominic Baguio from the University of the Philippines Diliman went on to win the task overall, impressing the judging panel with the poised delivery of his presentation on the need for an on-the-fly encryption application for devices running on Android OS," Kaspersky Lab said in its blog.

On-the-fly encryption is a method that allows for easy access of files within a drive.

Overall, Firman Azhari from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia took first place, Dusan Repel from the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom grabbed second and Iwan Gulenko from the Technical University of Munich, Germany landed third.

The competition is the flagship of Kaspersky Lab’s efforts to seek, support and educate talented young people from all over the globe as they set out on a career in information technology security, the company said.
