MANILA, Philippines —   The new United States ambassador has conveyed Washington’s strong desire to bring his country’s relationship with the Philippines to an even higher level, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

On Monday, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro received US Ambassador Lee Lipton for a courtesy call at the DFA, ahead of his presentation of credentials to President Marcos.

Lazaro welcomed Lipton and expressed her appreciation for the continued priority given by the US to its alliance with the Philippines.

She noted that his assumption of the Manila diplomatic post comes as both countries commemorate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).

Lipton emphasized the readiness of the US to work closely with the Philippines on meaningful and concrete initiatives that would deliver lasting benefits to both countries and their peoples.

Lazaro, for her part,  underscored the Philippines’ readiness to work with Lipton and the US government in advancing shared priorities across defense and security, economic security, trade and investment, people-to-people ties and regional affairs.

She highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation in key initiatives, including the Luzon Economic Corridor, economic resilience, greater American investments in the Philippines and broader efforts that support peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

The two sides also exchanged views on upcoming high-level engagements and opportunities to further deepen cooperation. Lipton affirmed US support for the Philippines’ chairship of ASEAN and its commitment to work with Manila in advancing regional priorities.

Lazaro said the DFA looks forward to working closely with Lipton during his tenure, noting that his appointment as US ambassador reflects the importance the US attaches to its relationship with the Philippines.
