MANILA, Philippines — A suspect referred to as “Batman” facilitated the attempted escape of five Chinese fugitives through a backdoor route in Mindanao, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

Ying Guanzhen, 31; Yang Jinlong, 29; Liu Xin, 28; Shen Kan, 36, and Luo Honglin, 27, were intercepted on a boat in Tawi-Tawi on March 22.

Questioned by the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Filipino boatmen said they were instructed to service passengers across borders, adding they did not know that their passengers are Chinese.

The boatmen said they only knew their contact as Batman.

Reports received by the BI said the PNP is investigating suspicious green substances found at the scene, indicating a possible drug deal.

The five suspects have been transferred to the BI detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

The blacklisted Chinese nationals are linked to Lucky South 99 Corp., a Philippine offshore gaming operator hub raided by authorities in Pampanga.
