3 Reds, soldier slain in Sultan Kudarat encounter

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Three suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas and an Army soldier were killed in an encounter in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat before dawn on Thursday.
Reports said troopers of the Army’s 37th Infantry Battalion (IB) were responding to reports about the presence of armed men in Barangay Datu Ito Andong when the rebels opened fire at them.
Two of the slain rebels were identified as Brix Alison and Tomas Sales of the NPA’s Sub-Regional Committee-Daguma Area and Regional Sentro de Gravidad.
The military said Alison and Sales and some officials of the NPA regional committee were facing criminal cases in different courts in Central Mindanao.
The third fatality, identified as Myca Bunsing, was reportedly a member of the NPA’s medical team.
Lt. Col. Christopherson Capuyan, chief of the Army’s 37th IB, identified the slain soldier as Cpl. Jay-Ar Baay.
The military said the rebels retreated, leaving behind their dead comrades.
Soldiers recovered four assault rifles and improvised explosive devices at the scene of the firefight.
