DOH aims to vaccinate 400,000 kids vs measles

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) is eyeing to immunize over 400,000 children in Metro Manila against measles.
Dr. Lester Tan, director of the DOH Metro Manila Center for Health Development, said they plan to vaccinate 435,576 children aged nine to 59 months under the “Bakunahan sa purok ni Juan: A measles catchup immunization activity.”
“We are targeting children who may have missed their scheduled routine immunizations or those who only received the first dose,” Tan said.
The DOH conducted measles immunization in Manila yesterday.
Tan said if the DOH fails to meet its target, measles outbreaks may occur.
Around 41,000 children have received measles shots since the immunization drive started last week, the DOH said.
“We will continue visiting communities and conduct house-to-house immunization to encourage parents to have their children vaccinated against measles,” Tan said.
Data from the DOH Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit showed 368 cases of measles were recorded in the National Capital Region from January to March 15.
