I was reading the interview by Philstar columnist Wilson Lee Flores with Sen. Tito Sotto and I came across a portion where I could sense the Cebuano in Sir Tito.

The senator remembers quite well his grandfather’s mother named Pascuala Yap. He said of her: “She was a humble fish vendor in Carbon market of Cebu. My grandfather’s dad Marcelino Sotto was a cargador in the pier of Cebu. So the traditional elites of Cebu looked down upon them, because they came from poor families.”

Us Pinoys are the No. 1 in the world in English language proficiency. Truth to tell, many of us are not really proficient like that 12 year-old garbage scavenger who managed to carry on a conversation with a reporter of a foreign TV network. The conversation ended with the reporter giving the scavenger two thumbs up as he faced the TV cam.
