A man who regularly prays at a church in the downtown area said he no longer trusts those kids who ask him for one peso in exchange for lighting a candle in front of the church for his heavenly intercessions. The man said he once gave money to a child to light a candle for him and he pretended to be on his way. But he later came back to see the child had not lit the promised candle and was in fact trying to sell it to a passing woman. He told The Ear that after he pays for the candle he now stays around and makes sure the child lights it in front of him before going on his way.

Another Ear source he said some unscrupulous churches do this en masse.Some churches allegedly sell candles to churchgoers and assign some boys to take them to a special place to light them and save the faithful the trouble. But the source said these candles do not go anywhere but back on the shelves so they can be bought again.
