EU upholds family values in 2014 Cine Europa

Patricia Lourdes Viray - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Romanian film "Child's Pose" (Pozitia copilului) opened Cine Europa 17. Directed by Calin Peter Netzer, this drama film won the Golden Bear Award in the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

It was also selected as Romania's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.

It is one of the 23 films from different European countries featured on Cine Europa 17 from September 11 to November 16 in 9 cities.

"Today European families come in all shapes and sizes but what remains constant is the strength of familial bonds and the role they play in the rich fabric of our societies," said Lubomir Frebort, Charge d'Affaires of the European Union Delegation to the Philippines.

Child's Pose follows Cornelia, a mother seeking to reassert control of her son in his 30s. Played by Luminita Gheorghiu, Cornelia is just like any parents who wants to protect her child. The film starts with Cornelia complaining to her sister-in-law, Olga (Natasa Raab), about her son who did not want to spend her birthday with her.

The conflict arises when Cornelia learns that her son Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache) was involved in a car accident and killed a little boy.

She rushes to the police station to announce her as mother of the man who caused the accident. What follows are Cornelia's attempts to keep Barbu out of jail.

The camera moves unsteady in key parts of Child's Pose to show viewers the sense of Cornelia's urgency to do something for her son. At the latter part of the film, Cornelia, a mother who does not want to lose her son, meets the little boy's mother, a mother who already lost her son.
