Church: No to summer wear during Masses

MANILA, Philippines - With youths sporting shorter skirts and plunging necklines to beat the summer heat, an official of the Catholic Church yesterday reminded them that such clothing should not be worn when they hear Mass.

Legazpi City Bishop Joel Baylon, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY), told the youth to observe proper attire when they enter churches.

This was Baylon’s reaction to reports that some teenagers have been seen hearing Sunday Mass in skimpy shorts and revealing blouses, which are against the guidelines issued on the proper Mass attire.

The summer heat, he said, “is not an excuse” and urged the public to follow the correct dress code.

He believed that many of today’s youth have been influenced by the customs in other countries such as in the United States, where wearing shorts is acceptable since these are comfortable during summer and after Mass they would have a picnic.

“But for me it’s propriety. If we prepare and be in our best attire if the President or a governor is coming, what more if it is Jesus Christ? It just so happens that Jesus is simple, that he comes to us in the form of bread and wine, so we sort of take it for granted. He is the author of everything. He is the source of everything that we are,” Baylon said.

The CBCP official also said that while there is no strict rule or corresponding punishment against those who would violate the dress code during church activities, he believes that a person should be properly dressed while in the Lord’s presence.

“My advice to the youth is that you look at the person you are facing. If God is important to you and you would meet Him, then you should dress accordingly. You should not only prepare yourself inside but outside as well. I think the Lord deserves more than simply shorts and sneakers,” he added.

A few years ago, the Archdiocese of Manila issued new guidelines on the proper Mass attire. Oftentimes, these guidelines would be seen posted within church premises as a reminder to parishioners.

Men are asked to wear collared shirts with sleeves, and jeans or slacks, while caps, sports jerseys and shorts are considered improper.

Women are encouraged to wear collared blouses, dresses, skirts, corporate or office attire or school uniforms.

The Church frowns on improper attire for women such as blouses with spaghetti straps or tank tops, miniskirts or skimpy shorts, sleeveless dresses or those with revealing necklines.
