Noynoy expects no 'honeymoon'

- Aurea Calica -

MANILA, Philippines - Incoming president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is no longer expecting a honeymoon from criticism, noting that he has been receiving flak even before assuming office.

“Maybe because I haven’t gotten married yet so they would not give me a honeymoon. That’s okay with me,” Aquino said in jest during the awarding of Outstanding Manilans Thursday night. Aquino is a bachelor at 50.

Aquino has been getting cheers as well as jeers for his supposed choices of Cabinet members. He will formally assume office after his inauguration on Wednesday.

The honeymoon period with the media and critics usually lasts 100 days for every new president.

Also on Thursday, Aquino met with his brother-in-law, basketball star James Yap, in his house on Times street in Quezon City.

Yap is said to be having marital problems with his wife, actress and television host Kris Aquino-Yap, the youngest sister of the president-elect.

The incoming president said what they discussed was a private matter between him and his brother-in-law.

“I think we’ll keep these things in the family,” Aquino said, adding he did not exactly give any advice.

“I just lent an ear to listen to what he had to say and give a few cents’ worth. It can also be said that I’m not qualified to advise him on such matters,” Aquino said.

Aquino said it would be up to the couple to settle their problem and he would talk to them only when asked. With Evelyn Macairan
