MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan , Philippines — The rains brought by the southwest monsoon raised the water elevation of Angat Dam yesterday, although not enough to breach past its critical level of 160 meters.

Records from the provincial disaster risk reduction and management office (PDRRMO) showed that the dam’s water level as of 2 p.m. was at 156.21 meters, slightly higher than the previous day’s 155.87 meters.

The PDRRMO said yesterday’s water level was still 3.79 meters below the dam’s critical level.

Angat provides more than 90 percent of the raw water needs of Metro Manila residents. It also provides irrigation to 25,000 hectares of ricelands in Bulacan and Pampanga, aside from providing additional hydropower energy to the Luzon Grid.

After the dam’s water level fell below 160 meters, the water supply was dedicated solely to Metro Manila. The allocations for irrigation and hydropower were suspended.
