Rescued animals turned over to DENR

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — Animal species including cockatiels, pythons and tarantulas rescued in separate areas in Central Luzon have been turned over to the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Authorities said the pythons were seized recently from three residential properties in the villages of Tabun, Pulungbulo and Pulung Maragul in Angeles City.
Before the pythons were turned over to the DENR, the snakes were brought to the city government for proper handling and assessment.
Earlier, several wildlife traders were arrested in separate entrapment operations in the region.
Among the animals recovered during the operations in Bataan, Olongapo and Zambales were a ball python, four exotic tarantulas and four cockatiels from Australia, respectively, the DENR said.
DENR-Central Luzon director Ralph Pablo said that collection, possession, transport, sale or trade of wildlife without permits is prohibited under Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
Violators may face fines, imprisonment or both.
