6 killed in Pangasinan fire

URDANETA CITY, Philippines — Six people were killed in a fire that struck a residential area in this city at dawn on Monday.
The remains of the victims, including two minors and an elderly, were recovered at the scene of the incident that occurred in Zone 2, Barangay Nancayasan.
Investigation showed the fire started at 2 a.m. and originated at the kitchen of one of two houses that were destroyed in the blaze.
Firefighters declared the fire out at past 4 a.m.
Probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
In Baguio City, an 82-year-old man died in a fire that destroyed his property at North Sanitary Camp before dawn yesterday.
City Fire Marshal Supt. Mark Anthony Dangatan said the blaze broke out at around 1 a.m. in Purok 3, and was put under control 30 minutes later.
Dangatan said the victim was trapped in the house.
The fire displaced two families composed of six people.
Meanwhile, in Cagayan de Oro City, a man was killed in an overnight fire that destroyed at least 200 houses in the adjacent villages of Puntod and Lapasan on Monday night.
City Fire Marshal Supt. Christhopher Regencia said the blaze broke out at around 11 p.m. and was put out at around 4 a.m. the following day.
The fatality reportedly suffered a heart attack while escaping from the blaze.
The fire displaced more than 380 people who are now staying in a covered court in Barangay Puntod.
Authorities placed the amount of damage caused by the fire at P3 million. — Gerry Lee-Gorit
