DSWD: 259,979 trike drivers receive aid

MANILA, Philippines — Amid rising fuel prices, 259,979 tricycle drivers outside Metro Manila have received P5,000 in cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The DSWD conducted payouts from April 8 to 10.
“The DSWD remains committed to delivering this much-needed assistance until all targeted drivers across the country receive their cash grants,” DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said.
The initiative was in line with President Marcos’ directive to help public transport drivers cope with soaring prices of petroleum products due to the Middle East conflict.
The DSWD has so far disbursed almost P1.3 billion under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations or AICS.
Public utility vehicle drivers have been struggling with daily boundary fees and fuel costs since the Middle East war started in March.
One of the beneficiaries, Roberto Coyunes Jr., president of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association in Iloilo City, thanked the government for the cash aid.
To ensure that the financial assistance reaches the intended recipients, the DSWD said it has been coordinating with transport groups and local government units.
The cash payouts will continue until all tricycle drivers nationwide have been reached, the DSWD said.
