Struggling readers in Pasay down by 97.5% – DepEd

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education School Division of Pasay has cited an improvement in the number of struggling readers in the city as DepEd reported a 97.5-percent reduction based on the end-of-school-year assessment.
DepEd Pasay School Division Superintendent Joel Torrecampo said the report that 46.6 percent of students in Pasay struggled with reading was based on the middle-of-the-school-year assessment.
Students struggling with reading reached 39.93 percent in Metro Manila as of Jan. 19, with the highest number of struggling readers posted in Pasay at 47.50 percent, according to the Second Congressional Commission on Education, citing the DepEd’s Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment.
“Percentages are relative and depend on the total learner population of each school division. A higher percentage does not necessarily mean a larger number of struggling learners, and such figures must be interpreted within the proper context of population size and scope of assessment,” Torrecampo said.
“Learning recovery efforts produced measurable and significant results within one school year,” he added.
Torrecampo said progress can be attributed to the implementation of the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning program, Reading Remediation and Enhancement program funded through the Special Education Fund of the Pasay city government, as well as strict monitoring, learner profiling and data-driven instruction at all levels.
