MANILA, Philippines — A total of 106 people were arrested across the country in an intensified drive against cybercrimes, the Philippine National Police said.

Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said yesterday the suspected cybercriminals – accused of crimes such as digital fraud and online sexual exploitation – were arrested through sting operations, service of warrants and a rescue operation.

The PNP initiative also led to the rescue of 18 victims and 15 children in conflict with the law.

“We continue to strengthen our drive against cybercrimes not only because it is our mandate, but because millions of Filipinos depend on us to protect them in the digital space,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group has filed 188 cases, 120 under regular filing and 68 via inquest proceedings in November. The ACG also implemented 97 cyber warrants.

According to Nartatez, the ACG conducted 2,365 cyber patrolling activities, 68 digital forensic examinations and assisted in the conviction of 22 people.

As online scams usually surge during the Yuletide season, Nartatez reminded the public to be cautious when shopping online, receiving unsolicited messages or dealing with digital transactions.

He said cybercriminals often take advantage of the Christmas rush for their nefarious activities.

“Think twice before clicking, sharing personal information or dealing with suspicious offers,” Nartatez reminded the public.
