Families in Kanlaon danger zone warned of charges

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Families still staying inside the four-kilometer danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island may face charges if they refuse to vacate the area, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The DENR-Negros Island Region (NIR) said it would send letters to 132 families still living inside the danger zone to voluntarily vacate the area
DENR-NIR chief Charlie Fabre said these families transformed the danger zone into an agricultural property, when the area should have been a forest.
The provincial government has purchased a property in the town of La Castellana for the relocation of residents displaced by the volcano’s eruption.
Fabre said some of the displaced families are residents of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental.
The DENR said a large portion of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park is now planted with agricultural crops, which cannot hold water during heavy rain.
