Meta hit for snubbing Senate probe

Social media giant Meta on January 7, 2025 slashed its content moderation policies, including ending its US fact-checking program on Facebook and Instagram, in a major shift that conforms with the priorities of incoming president Donald Trump. The EU on January 8 rejected Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg's charge that the bloc engaged in "censorship" with its tech regulations.

MANILA, Philippines — Senate games and amusement committee chairman Sen. Erwin Tulfo slammed Meta for not attending his inquiry into online gambling yesterday, warning the social media giant that he would issue a subpoena to compel its representatives’ attendance at the next hearing.

Tulfo rejected the letter sent by Facebook Philippines Representative Office public policy manager Genixon David asking for a separate meeting with the senator instead to discuss Meta’s policy on online gambling and “money gaming content.”

David told the committee that Meta could not send a representative because their experts are based in Singapore and the United States and “are currently unavailable due to prior commitments.”

Sen. Risa Hontiveros seconded Tulfo’s motion to summon Meta in the next hearing or face contempt.
