Magnitude 5.3 quake jolts Davao Occidental coast, aftershocks expected

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the coast off Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental at 1:08 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
In its second bulletin, Phivolcs said the tectonic quake originated 80 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos, with a depth of focus of 140 kilometers.
While no damage is expected, aftershocks remain possible. Phivolcs also recorded instrumental intensities, with the highest reaching Intensity III, classified as weak.
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake is generally considered light to moderate, which is noticeable to people and capable of causing minor to slight damage to buildings.
