Groups seek P1 jeepney fare hike

MANILA, Philippines — Three transport groups yesterday filed a petition for a provisional increase of P1 in jeepney fares with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
The groups asked the LTFRB to increase the minimum jeepney fare from P13 to P14.
The Pangkalahatang Sanggunian Manila & Suburbs Drivers Association Nationwide Inc. or Pasang Masda, Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers’ Associations of the Philippines (ALTODAP) and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations filed the petition.
They said jeepney drivers and operators could no longer shoulder the higher costs of fuel, particularly diesel, which has increased from P54 to P60 per liter.
The proposed fare hike can offset the lost income of jeepney drivers estimated at P200 to P300 per day, ALTODAP president Boy Vargas said.
The transport groups have asked LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III to grant their request for a provisional fare increase, Pasang Masda president Obet Martin said.
Last week, the LTFRB opposed a fare hike, pointing out that the government has allocated a fuel subsidy of P2.5 billion for drivers of public utility vehicles.
