Comelec defends suspension of proclamation of Isabela vice mayor

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday expressed readiness to defend its decision to suspend the proclamation of Jeryll Harold Respicio as vice mayor of Reina Mercedes town in Isabela.
“Comelec is ready to defend its actions before the Supreme Court with the concomitant commitment to abide by any and all orders to be issued by it,” Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said in reaction to the petition for certiorari filed by Respicio’s counsel before the High Court.
“This is what Chairman Garcia has been saying all along: do everything within the metes and bounds of legal processes and procedures,” Laudiangco said.
In his petition, Respicio asked the High Court to nullify the Comelec ruling and to order the poll body to proclaim him as a duly elected vice mayor.
The Comelec suspended the proclamation of Respicio due to a pending complaint for alleged unlawful use of publication and unlawful utterances.
