DOTr: 4.3 million commuters benefit from free train rides

MANILA, Philippines —  Nearly 4.3 million passengers availed themselves of free rides on three rail lines in Metro Manila from April 30 to May 3 under President Marcos’ “libreng sakay” program for Labor Day, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported yesterday.

The Metro Rail Transit 3 as well as the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 offered free rides, resulting in record-breaking ridership for the MRT-3, which logged 481,156 passengers on April 30.

The DOTR said 1,618,541 commuters used the MRT-3 over the four-day period.

The LRT-1 served an average of 460,000 passengers, according to operator Light Rail Manila Corp.

The LRT-2 recorded 787,284 ridership.
